Fire and Ice
There is only one game left to be played. Only two teams. Only one ultimate victor. But there are still two weeks until that happens so let the over-analyzing begin!
In two weeks the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots will face off in Super Bowl LI in Houston, TX. Let's be honest, there is no surprise that the Patriots are there. With the minor question mark surrounding the first four games of the season and how Tom Brady's temporary absence would impact the team's season, it was rather expected to see them still standing. There really wasn't any legitimate threat in the AFC to dethrone them.
The Falcons, however, are a bit of a surprise. First of all, after the dominance of the Carolina Panthers last season, it would have been foolish to predict that they would not win the division. It seems that the loss of Josh Norman and the loss in the Super Bowl had more of an impact than anticipated. The Falcons soared in the weakness of its own division and beyond.
They say that offense wins games and defense wins championships so if that is the case there may be some cause for concern for the Falcons. Their average points allowed for the season stands at 25.4 points per game, ranked 27th in the league. The eye test from the NFC championship game does prove that the defense, led by Vic Beasley Jr., can show up when necessary.
Though the defense needs to rise, it has been an offensive masterpiece that this team has put together this season. Averaging 33.8 points per game, the Falcons have consistently led an all out offensive attack that has put opposing defenses on their heels. The leadership of Julio Jones (who has been playing through the pain of turf toe) and Matt Ryan (aka Matty Ice) no defense has been able to slow this team down. In losing efforts this season, the Falcons have still scored 24 or more points each time.
For the record, I would like to recall that when many people had Matty Ice out of their top 5 in the MVP, I still predicted him to take it...and it is looking like he might.
The firey offensive attack led by the Man of Ice, a theory in the combination of polar opposites, could make for a volatile situation that could explode all over NRG Stadium in the form of all-out domination on the part of the Falcons.
Either that or they will just melt.
