Netanyahu for US President 2016?

Democrats in the United States have been jumping on the Hilary Clinton bandwagon seemingly since Obama's re-election and have positioned her as the current front runner for the Democratic ticket for the 2016 Presidential elections. It seems that now the Republicans have found their candidate as well. In a speech to both houses of the US Congress, Benjamin Netanyahu aroused anthems of applause from the right side of the aisle as Republicans whooped and hollered in a way reminiscent of a State of the Union address.

With dogmatic rhetoric, Netanyahu outlined the sins of Iran against the Jewish state and emphasized the "special relationship" Israel has with the United States.

In first stating that the "enemy of your enemy is truly your enemy," a twist on a common cliche, Bibi employed verbal extremism in stating that the greatest fear of the world is the "marriage of militant Islam with nuclear weapons." It is interesting to note, however, that some theorists of international relations agree that if each nation were allotted nuclear weapons, the possibility of "mutually assured destruction" would keep anyone from actually using the weapons thus creating a peaceful society.

Whether that is true, Netanyahu was not speaking about peace. While stating that Iran should end aggression in the Middle East and throughout the world and specifically end threats to Israel, he did not hesitate to mention that with or without the US, he would take action; unilateral action if necessary.

Interestingly, on Bibi's third point of action against the threats toward Israel, a raucous cheer and a standing ovation sounded from the Republicans in the chamber as if they were Israelis themselves. Democrats at this point and it many other times remained seated with polite clapping. It is enjoyable sometimes to witness partisan applause.

The gaping hole in Netanyahu's speech can be summed up in one word: How? President Obama, Jewish Senator Dianne Feinstein, and others agree that the elocution of the speech was nice but no alternatives were given. Yes, Bibi does not want a nuclear plan with Iran to be reached stating that no plan is better than a bad plan but, as properly asked by the President, if there is no plan, then what will stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear arsenal even quicker and without restriction.

Listening to Netanyahu, it is clear that he does not believe in change. Equating modern Iranians to WWII Nazis he expects Iran to pursue genocide. It is true that Iran has bullied Israel but as is mentioned in his reaction, Obama is quick to reassure  the media and all listeners that so far, Iran has met to every condition that has been agreed upon. Can Iran change? Bibi says no but Obama says yes.

As a professional mudslinger, Netanyahu has pushed his way into US partisan politics all while vying for his real election for Prime Minister of Israel with voting in less than two weeks. Though it is impossible for Netanyahu, due to citizenship requirements, to become president of the US it is a bit unnerving to see how Republican lawmakers have fallen under his spell almost to the point of credibility to Ariel Sharon's October 2001 quote: "We, the Jewish people, control America and the Americans know it."

Are you going to vote for him?
